Although addressing concerns the chief priest has is understandable, I don't think that residents in Kyoto expect traditional religious ceremony. Since I was born in Kyoto, circumstance of Kyoto has changed drastically from one of the domestic popular cities to a world-class travel destination now. Not only travellers but also huge number of residents look forward to having a spectacle entertainment experience at the Gion Festival. The three consequtive nights before the parade day are called Yoiyama, so-called eve of the parade of the festival. Many stalls are set up along streets at night, and the floats are decorated with lanterns and traditional solemn music while parking along these streets, creating a splended fantasy ambience. Young people such as high school, university students, and young adults wear yukata robes and enjoy this colorful and gorgeous atmosphere. It resembles to the atmosphere of a night parade at Disneyland park plus classical music. Everyone now enjoys the Gion Festival as an entertainment show, except for the elderly who respect tradition. During the period of the festival, it is said that around 1.5 million people visit Kyoto to enjoy the event. For the reference, the number of Kyoto city population is 1.5 million. Now I live outside Kyoto and usually avoid visiting Kyoto during the festival because of heavy traffic congestion and large crowds. It is really mess. Best regards, 5971mak

Dear SaraRoseNY, Thank you for your informative explanation and answering my question. I understood how to use "could." I often wrote "I could..." as my ability in the past, but it can be confusing, so I'll try to choose "I was able to..." from now on. The positive tone which you revised for me was totally suitable to the situation. I tended to choose negation, but I want to think and write constructively, so I have to change it. I also appreciate your agreement to my statement about human nature. I will send another writing soon! Have a great week! Best regards, mkawa
