When I gave a pack of rock salt to my Mongolian friend who lives in Japan, she asked me to put the salt on anywhere else, not to hand it to her directly. She told me that it was also a Mongolian custom; they believe that if you are handed salt by someone, the someone will become your enemy. It is very interesting because I thought that nomad people were rather savage and love to have a fight (it might sound discriminative though).
