Certifications
I have a TESL-equivalent certificate from a few decades ago and experience as a teaching assistant at a Canadian university. I have also taught English in three countries and worked as an editor at five English-language news outlets in East and Southeast Asia. These experiences make it easier for me to identify successful and unsuccessful patterns in the way that non-native English writers use words. They also help me select suitable strategies to help students develop their skills and confidence. I believe that confidence is essential to learning how to write in any language.
Announcements
My main strength is plenty of international experience. I worked as a writer and editor in East and Southeast Asia for about 30 years before returning to Toronto, Canada in July 2025. I understand firsthand the frustrations and fun of learning how to write in a foreign language. Note that I said "fun." I don't think learning has to be difficult all the time. In fact, when learning is fun it goes faster and lasts longer. The personal characteristics that I believe are essential to be a good teacher include patience, knowledge and empathy. All students learn better when they have a good rapport with their teacher. That's what I want to say to everyone reading this.
Hobbies/Travel
I cannot list just one country as a favorite, but Laos and Cambodia are at the top of the list. I would add Osaka, Taipei, and New York if this list included favorite cities. I enjoy card games like Tien Len, a Vietnamese card-shedding game, and contract bridge to relax. Reading is also a major part of my life. I am especially obsessed with Russian literature. For outdoor sports I enjoy fishing, boating, camping and hiking. I do yoga to relax in the evenings and at the beginning of each day.
Message from the instructor
Besides looking at the grammar, spelling, punctuation and syntax of your writing I try to get a sense of how you think in English. What this means is that I look for logical flows from one sentence to the next to see if you are developing a thesis, argument or description. Errors will be pointed out, explained and corrected. I will also explain the difference between casual and formal writing. I will also recommend reading and review exercises if these are warranted. Please note that if you find the way I explain corrections difficult to understand you can let me know so that I can adjust to your needs.
