Announcements
I live in New Zealand and recently finished work here as a professional engineer after 45 years with private consulting civil engineering companies and the engineering departments of Auckland local authorities. I have a New Zealand Bachelor of Engineering degree. During my professional career, I participated in many and varied engineering projects, and I summarize the main categories of this work (with their writing components) as follows: • Independent advice Developing programs and procedures, peer reviews, and contract documents. • Procurement for engineering contracts Reviewing and editing procurement and tender documentation. • Quality assurance writing Developing a business systems manual to satisfy the requirements of ISO9001:2015, “Quality Management Systems.” • Health and safety writing Developing company health and safety systems to satisfy the requirements of the “Health and Safety at Work Act 2015” (NZ) and ISO 45001:2018, "Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.” Based on the above and my familiarity with civil engineering documents, I can offer strengths in reviewing technical writing work of a general nature. In conducting proofreading, editing, and review work, I find personal satisfaction while supporting non-English speaking people who need help along the pathway of their written English language journey. My background of years of involvement and experience in reviewing and editing documents and reports in clear, concise English is the strength that I offer to those seeking support with building their own English writing skills. In New Zealand, the summer season is between December and February. That is the time of year I like to take a long holiday, so I would usually not be available for writing support work in the days between the last week of December and the first two weeks of January. Outside of that period, I am generally available for the first four weekdays of each week (i.e., Monday to Thursday inclusive).
Hobbies/Travel
In recent years, I have become what I would describe as quite a “prolific reader,” with a preference for non-fiction over fiction writing. I have a particular interest in reading about historical people and events, but I also read selected technical material. I am a keen walker, able to get out most days and spend half an hour or so walking at a brisk pace. I am fortunate to live close to the seaside, so beach walking is one of my favorite pastimes—great for breathing the fresh sea air and clearing the mind. Crossword puzzles are another passion I have. I find them challenging, yet informative, and they also help with focus and maintaining mental sharpness. Accompanied by my family, I spent weeks on a road tour of the United Kingdom. My children (young at the time) were spellbound by our visit to Disneyland, California, which we undertook while returning from the UK trip. My wife and I have also spent time in Fiji and have been privileged over the years to do four road driving trips in Australia. Overall, I think my favorite country out of those visited is Australia. It is quite close geographically to New Zealand yet is quite different in many ways. There are vast distances to cover, but I found it fascinating to observe the visible changes that gradually became apparent when traveling from south to north (or vice versa) because of the latitude changes from the temperate right through to the tropical zones. Of course, it is always helpful to travel in a country where the language spoken is the same as your own, apart from the local slang and accents!
Message from the instructor
I have become familiar with the American Psychological Association (APA) Style Guide. The APA Guide format and style is widely used by professionals, researchers, and students in the social and behavioral sciences, including fields like education, psychology, and business. My proofreading and editing of texts follow the APA guide and its expectations for style. I seek to review: • A right balance between editing and rewriting • Both structure checking and clarity checking of sentences • The application of the conventions for different document types (e.g., academic writing) • Correct spelling (including typographical errors) • The correct use of word choice, compound nouns and adjectives, capitalization, and punctuation • Consistency of usage and style throughout the entire written text As an English instructor, I aim to help individuals and organizations communicate with their readers in a naturally flowing, English language style that follows established conventions and procedures and can be understood by those readers. Whenever editing requires me to amend the original text supplied, I give the reasons why I made those changes and explain the significance of the amended text, either the words, the structure or both. I will do this to help text writers gradually build their understanding of the subtleties of written English and boost the writers’ confidence in applying that understanding.
